Sweatpant Overalls vs. Adult Onesies: Which One Should You Actually Buy?

By Swoveralls. Facts checked October 3, 2026.

An adult onesie is a one-piece pajama with a front zipper, sleeves, and usually a hood, built for sleeping and lounging at home. Sweatpant overalls cover your legs and torso with a bib and straps, leave your arms free for whatever shirt you want, and are easier to wear out of the house. Choose a onesie if you want full-body warmth or a holiday costume; choose sweatpant overalls if you want comfort you can also wear to the store, the airport, or a friend's place.

We make Swoveralls, the original sweatpant overalls, so factor that in. For the onesies, we used only what MeUndies and Tipsy Elves publish on their own product pages as of October 3, 2026, and there are cases below where a onesie is the smarter buy.

What you're actually comparing

Both categories solve the same problem: regular pants have a waistband, and some days that's one thing too many. They solve it differently.

A onesie is one garment from wrists to ankles. You zip in and you're done. MeUndies' unisex Onesie has a center front zipper, a hood with a drawstring, a tapered cuffed leg, and a relaxed fit. Tipsy Elves sells holiday and costume jumpsuits, like the Men's Blue Reindeer Jumpsuit, with front pockets, a zipper closure, and a lined hood.

Sweatpant overalls are pants with a bib and straps. Swoveralls have no waistband, adjustable straps, jogger cuffs, a zipper fly, and six pockets, including a hidden zip pocket inside the bib. You pick the top: a tee in summer, a hoodie in January, nothing at all if you're painting the garage and don't care.

Comfort and fabric

MeUndies makes its Onesie from 92% MicroModal and 8% elastane. MeUndies describes MicroModal as a fabric spun from sustainably sourced beechwood fibers and calls it breathable and static resistant. If you already like the feel of modal underwear or pajamas, this is that fabric in onesie form.

The Tipsy Elves jumpsuit is 100% polyester fleece. That's the classic onesie fabric: fuzzy, warm, and built for holiday morning photos.

Most Swoveralls are made with 95% GOTS-certified organic cotton and 5% spandex. Corduroy, fleece, and French Terry styles have their own blends, and a few older-production colors list a different blend on the product page, so check the specific pair before you buy. The point of the fabric is sweatpant comfort with some stretch.

For warmth, the onesie has a built-in advantage: it covers your arms and head. Overalls cover what's below your shoulders, and your top layer does the rest.

The bathroom problem

Nobody puts this on the product page, so here it is plainly. A onesie with a single front zipper generally has to come mostly off when you use the bathroom. That's fine at home and less fun in a bar restroom on New Year's Eve. Some onesies use two-way zippers, so check the listing if this matters to you.

Swoveralls have a zipper fly, which handles most trips without touching the straps. The straps also adjust and unbuckle when you do need to step out of them.

Wearing it out of the house

This is where the two split hardest. A reindeer fleece jumpsuit is great at a holiday party and a little much at the pharmacy. A solid-color modal onesie is quieter, but it is sleepwear and most people will read it that way.

Sweatpant overalls read as clothes. Kyle Bergman started Swoveralls because sweatpant overalls didn't exist and he wanted a pair, and the result is a pair of pants you can wear to a concert or on a flight. Put a sweater under them and you can go to brunch without explaining yourself.

Sizing and fit

MeUndies sizes its unisex Onesie in paired sizes from XS/S to 3XL/4XL. MeUndies also lists a men's-fit UltraModal Onesie with functional side pockets and a 28-inch inseam, which was marked final sale when we checked. Tipsy Elves lists the Blue Reindeer Jumpsuit in XS to 3XL, and the product page notes its model is 6'2" with a 31-inch waist wearing a Large.

Swoveralls use unisex sizing. Core colors run XS to 4XL, and most prints run S to 4XL. Since the waist is loose by design, fit mostly comes down to length and strap adjustment. Our fit guide has the measurements.

One-piece garments are harder to size than pants because your torso length matters as much as your height. That's true for onesies and for overalls, so read the size chart either way.

Price

The onesies are cheaper. The MeUndies Onesie is $79 and the Tipsy Elves Blue Reindeer Jumpsuit is $79.95. Core Swoveralls are $99, and prints are $120. If you want a full-zip, full-body option from us, Comfyalls (sweatpant coveralls) start at $149 and have seven pockets, a full-body YKK zipper, and an adjustable waistband.

Swoveralls ship free in the US on qualifying orders, and most products have a 365-day return and exchange window with free size and color exchanges. Details are on the FAQ page.

So which should you buy?

Get an adult onesie if:

  • you mostly want something to sleep in
  • you run cold and want your arms and head covered
  • it's for a holiday morning, a matching-family photo, or a themed party (Tipsy Elves is built for this)
  • you want the lower price

Get sweatpant overalls if:

  • you want to wear it outside the house without anyone asking if you just woke up
  • you want pockets, including one that zips
  • you want to change your top layer with the season
  • you'd like bathroom trips to stay simple

Owning both is also allowed. If overalls sound right, start with the full Swoveralls collection.

FAQ

Are sweatpant overalls warmer than an adult onesie?

Usually not on their own, because a onesie covers your arms and head. Overalls let you add any top underneath, so warmth depends on what you layer.

Can you wear Swoveralls in public?

Yes. They're overalls with a bib, straps, a zipper fly, and jogger cuffs, so they look like clothing rather than pajamas.

What is the MeUndies onesie made of?

MeUndies lists its unisex Onesie as 92% MicroModal and 8% elastane, with a center front zipper, a drawstring hood, and a tapered cuffed leg. It was $79 when we checked.

Do Tipsy Elves onesies have pockets?

The Men's Blue Reindeer Jumpsuit product page mentions front pockets and a zipper closure. It's 100% polyester fleece and comes in XS to 3XL for $79.95.

What sizes do Swoveralls come in?

Core colors come in unisex XS to 4XL. Most print styles run S to 4XL.
